Chicano/Chicana The term Chicano/Chicana refers to people of Mexican origin or descent living in the United States. The term has recently been reclaimed to express political empowerment and racial solidarity. Some Mexican Americans choose to refer to themselves as Chicano/Chicana rather than Hispanic or Latino because they believe these terms cannot account for their mix of Spanish and indigenous heritage.


The term "Chicano" became popular among many Mexican Customer Phone Number List Americans during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Why does this matter? We must recognize that there are many different communities within the Hispanic/Latino community. It is common for (especially 20+) nationalities to be unified under one flag.



Using these words interchangeably does not help foster a sense of community among the people they are supposed to describe. The Hispanic/Latino community is made up of different cultures, traditions and heritages. They are not a whole.
