The concept of psychological ownership refers to the experience of owning and being psychologically attached to a circumstance in your life. Such feelings of ownership are fundamental to human life. Every day, we interact with a variety of objects that we own, material and immaterial. The state of psychological ownership is not only cognitive but also affective: simply calling a circumstance – be it an object, another person or a job – “yours” suggests that we have an emotional connection about it.

In the corporate environment employees express psychological ownership by grabbing projects as “theirs”, incorporating a feeling of independent ownership of the chair they occupy. Let's look at an example. In research , using data from Email Data more than 800 employees, Linn Van Dyne of Michigan State University and Jon L. Pierce of the University of Minnesota Duluth found that respondents' feeling psychological ownership of the organizations they represent is positively associated with : Their attitudes: job satisfaction and commitment to the organization; Behavior at work: performance and organizational citizenship.
